What My Students Say

“Jovana is a truly wonderful resource in chess fundamentals and advanced topics. I have studied chess with her in a group setting via Zoom sessions with members of our chess club. She always respects us students when presenting her observations on chess strategies and tactics with a focus on understanding why something works on the board. There are no demeaning moments with her!  I have found that I can follow her without much struggling on my part.  She addresses our questions with suggestions on probable solutions challenging us to figure it out. For my part, I have continued to learn more about the game and its rewards.  Time spent under her guidance is well worth it in my opinion. “

Bob Richardson

“Jovana is a patient and thorough instructor, super impressive knowledge of chess. A real pleasure to work with. “

Kurt Lange

“Very understanding and has a way of explaining hard concepts in an easy and fluid way, best coach I’ve ever had, without her help I would not have become the KY highschool senior champion.”

Matt Phelps

“I have taken group chess lessons from Master Milosevic since 2017, both in-person and on Zoom. Her lessons have greatly increased my understanding and enjoyment of chess. She determines from talking with her students what they need to improve on. She is open to covering the topics that her students are most interested in. Master Milosevic uses the Socratic Method of teaching by posing questions to her students and then guiding them to an answer.  If you enjoy learning and improving your understanding of chess, you will love learning with Master Milosevic. “

Dennis Mays

“Jovana is an exceptional chess teacher who has completely transformed my game. Over the past two years, I’ve witnessed my chess rating soar by more than 200 points, a testament to her exceptional teaching skills. Jovana has a knack for making complex chess concepts clear and approachable. She doesn’t just drill theory into you; she fosters a deep understanding of strategic principles and tactical motifs. This holistic approach has equipped me with the tools to not only identify winning opportunities on the board but also to grasp the underlying logic behind them. Jovana’s passion for chess is infectious, and her enthusiasm creates a truly engaging learning environment. She tailors her instruction to individual needs, ensuring each student progresses at their own pace.  If you’re looking to elevate your chess game to the next level, I cannot recommend Jovana highly enough!”

Michael Abramov

“As a casual, but interested player in chess who was looking to learn more about the game from the smallest details to the high level strategies and all the tactics in-between, Jovana was the perfect instructor for me. She tailored a great series of lessons curated to my needs that were always entertaining, informative and valuable. Jovana provided all my lessons in an intelligent , concise and professional manner and I thoroughly enjoyed and looked forward to each and every lesson.”

Andre

“Jovana has improved my rating from 1600 to 1900 in the span of one year because of her clear explanations and game analyses. I have learned so many new things that helped me gain a deeper understanding of the game. Her positional understanding is what makes her explanations so lucid, and so her classes make abstract concepts seem easy to grasp, for anyone from a beginner to master level. I would highly recommend Jovana to be your next chess coach! “

Jonathan Wu

“I had the great fortune to take lessons from Jovana for almost one year.  My biggest weakness was positional play, so most of our lessons focused on that.  I always found Jovana to be prepared, professional, and encouraging.  The lessons were challenging.  Jovana consistently pushed me just a little past my comfort zone.  That was exactly what I needed to get stronger.

Looking back on my lessons, the things that stand out now (on top of a bunch of positional chess knowledge) are:

(1) having weekly lessons held me accountable.  I could not slack off since I had homework I had to get through before every lesson.  The steady focus on chess led to me actually reading a chess book front to back instead of just gazing at it fondly on my bookshelf like usual.

(2) I learned how to look at positions much more deeply than I ever did on my own.  I sometimes spent hours analyzing a homework position in preparation for a week’s lesson.  That deep study made a huge difference in my ability to analyze my own games.

(3) my calculation skills got much better.  Jovana pushed me to keep trying when I would normally have abandoned a tactical puzzle as being too difficult to solve or a variation in an annotated game as being too hard to visualize.  I found I had a much greater capacity for calculation when I just kept trying.

(4) in addition to being a teacher, Jovana was also a tour guide through some amazing master games of chess.  Everyone is familiar with games featuring tactical brilliancies, but Jovana showed me some positional games of staggering genius.  My favorite memories from my lessons are going through some of these games with Jovana and being awestruck by what the players saw over the board.”
Derek Jones

“Since 2017, I have attended many of Jovana’s lectures and classes. I have also had private lessons and coaching from her. She is a master at her craft. Jovana has a professional manner but can always explain chess concepts at a level her students can understand. Our chess club has used her for years to teach classes on a variety of topics. Jovana has a way of determining her student’s strengths and weaknesses. Accordingly, she is able to pitch the material in an efficient and effective manner. Her teaching style is two-way communication. She will ask questions in a way that encourages her students to ask themselves the same ones while playing. She highlights those aspects of a position that deserve special consideration. If you are looking for meaningful improvement in your game, Jovana would be an excellent choice for chess instruction.”

Yes, I am available for follow-up questions or clarification outside of our scheduled lesson times. You can reach out to me anytime via email. I’m here to help, so don’t hesitate to ask if you need any assistance.

For optimal improvement, I generally recommend scheduling lessons once or twice a week. This frequency provides consistent reinforcement of concepts and ample opportunity for feedback and adjustment. However, the ideal frequency ultimately depends on the student’s individual needs, schedule, and commitment to practice outside of lessons.

My approach to teaching chess is rooted in creating a personalized learning experience tailored to each student’s unique needs, learning style, and goals. I prioritize a comprehensive understanding of fundamental principles while also fostering critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and a deep appreciation for the game. Through a combination of interactive lessons, practical exercises, and constructive feedback, I aim to empower students to develop strategic thinking, improve their tactical awareness, and ultimately enhance their overall proficiency and enjoyment of chess.

The typical duration of a lesson is usually one hour, but I’m flexible and can adjust based on your needs. Whether you prefer shorter, focused sessions or longer, more comprehensive ones, we can tailor the duration to best suit your learning style and schedule. Yes, I do offer group lessons. Group lessons provide a collaborative and dynamic learning environment where students can benefit from interacting with peers, exchanging ideas, and engaging in friendly competition. Group sessions often include discussions, group activities, and opportunities for peer-to-peer learning, alongside individualized instruction tailored to each student’s needs.

For continued learning outside of chess lessons, I recommend exploring a variety of resources. Watching instructional videos can provide visual and strategic insights, while reading chess books can deepen your understanding of tactics and strategies. Practicing tactical puzzles regularly will enhance your problem-solving skills. Additionally, participating in online chess platforms can offer interactive tutorials and opportunities to play with others, further improving your game.
